This gap exists in young animals with limited exposure to life’s challenges, in mature animals with slow immune system responses, and in all animals where products such as vaccines or antibiotics don’t have an immediate impact. Newborn animals only receive short-term immunity from their mother’s colostrum; this is temporary and is depleted by two weeks of age. Young animals will begin to build their own ‘library of immunity” as they are exposed to the environment or come in contact with bacteria and viruses, however, this adaptive immunity can take years to build leaving their defenses vulnerable to sickness or mortality.
